Use LMSable with your AI chat
The LMSable skill is a free knowledge pack for your own AI chat. Once you add it, your AI knows how LMSable works and which format it accepts, so the outlines, lessons, quizzes and scenarios it writes import into Course Builder without rework. You can also ask it how to do something in LMSable instead of searching this help center.
Note
The skill is in public beta. The Claude steps are tested; the ChatGPT and Gemini steps may look slightly different on your plan. Tell us what you see: Contact and bug reports.
What the skill gives your AI
- The content format: the table of contents, every block type, quizzes and branching scenarios, with the limits LMSable checks. Your AI returns JSON that passes the import.
- Good course habits: it asks about the audience and goal first, splits lessons into highlights instead of one long text, and adds checks for the learner.
- Answers about LMSable: how to import, ask for review, export to SCORM or upload to an LMS, with links to the matching help article.
The skill does not replace LMSable. You still build, check and export the course in Course Builder. The skill and its source are public on GitHub: lmsable/lmsable-skill.
Before you start
- An account in Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini. Any plan that lets you add your own instructions or files works.
- An LMSable account if you want to import the results. Drafting with the skill needs no account.
Add the skill to Claude
- Download lmsable-skill.zip. Do not unzip it.
- In Claude, make sure code execution is on: Settings → Capabilities. Skills need it.
- Open Customize in the sidebar and go to Skills.
- Click +, then + Create skill, and choose Upload a skill.
- Select
lmsable-skill.zip. The skill appears in your list, switched on.
Claude uses the skill on its own when a chat is about LMSable or building a course. Anthropic describes the same steps in Use skills in Claude. On Team and Enterprise plans an Owner can turn skill uploads off; ask them if you do not see Upload a skill.
Add the skill to ChatGPT
In ChatGPT you use the skill as the instructions and files of a Project or a Custom GPT. Connecting ChatGPT to your LMSable account is a separate, optional step: Connect ChatGPT with a custom MCP server. What is available depends on your ChatGPT plan and workspace settings.
- Download and unzip lmsable-skill.zip.
- In ChatGPT, create a new Project, for example "LMSable courses".
- Paste the contents of
SKILL.mdinto the project instructions, without the---header at the top. - Add the files from the
referenceandexamplesfolders to the project. - Start your course chats inside that project.
To share the setup with your team, you can build a Custom GPT the same way. Step by step: install/chatgpt.md.
Add the skill to Gemini
- Download and unzip lmsable-skill.zip.
- In the Gemini app, open Gems and create a new Gem, for example "LMSable course helper".
- Paste the contents of
SKILL.mdinto the instructions, without the---header at the top. - Add the files from the
referenceandexamplesfolders as knowledge. - Save the Gem and start a chat with it.
Step by step: install/gemini.md.
What you should see
Start a new chat and ask: "Propose a table of contents for a 20-minute course on fire safety for warehouse staff, in the LMSable import format." The answer is one JSON block with modules and lessons. Paste it on the Lessons step of Course Builder as described in Import the table of contents from your AI.
Use it together with the connector
The skill teaches your AI the format; the LMSable connector lets it read and edit your courses directly, without copying and pasting. They work well together: with both, your AI can create a course, fill its lessons and fix them from the chat. See Connect Claude on the web with a connector and What your AI can do with your course.
If something goes wrong
- Claude says the upload failed: upload the ZIP exactly as downloaded. Unzipping and zipping it again often changes the folder name the skill needs.
- No Skills or Upload a skill option in Claude: turn on code execution under Settings → Capabilities. In a company workspace, ask your Owner whether skill uploads are allowed.
- The import says the JSON is not valid: the answer was cut short or has text inside the code block. Ask your AI to repeat the full JSON in one code block and paste it without changes.
- Your AI quotes prices or limits: the skill tells it not to, because plans change. Check Free and Pro: what is included.
